Deadhead Miles Calculator

Most successful owner-operators aim to keep deadhead under 10-15% of total miles. The industry average is around 12-15%. Anything above 20% significantly eats into your profit. Reducing deadhead by even a few percentage points can save thousands annually.

Deadhead miles are the distance you drive empty from your current location (or last delivery) to your next load's pickup point. Deadhead percentage is calculated as: (deadhead miles / total trip miles) x 100. Total trip miles include both deadhead and loaded miles.

It depends on the rate per mile for the loaded portion. Calculate your effective RPM across all miles (loaded revenue / total miles including deadhead). If the effective RPM still exceeds your cost per mile, the load may be worth taking, especially if the delivery puts you in a strong freight market.

Strategies include: plan routes to deliver into high-freight areas, use load boards to find backhauls, build relationships with shippers along your lanes, time your deliveries to match pickup schedules in the area, and consider partial loads or LTL to fill gaps.
