Local drivers are home every night, which is the single biggest advantage of local work. OTR drivers are typically out for 2-4 weeks at a time, which strains relationships and makes family life extremely challenging.

OTR drivers typically earn 20-40% more than local drivers due to mileage-based pay and the premium for being away from home. However, OTR has higher personal expenses (food, laundry) that partially offset the higher gross pay.

Local delivery drivers often handle freight — loading, unloading, dollying, and hand-stacking. OTR drivers primarily sit in the cab and rarely touch freight. The physical demands of local work are surprisingly high.
