Spring (March-May) and early fall (September-October) are typically the best times to sell commercial trucks. Freight demand is rising, new carriers are entering the market, and tax refund money is available. Avoid listing in December-January when the market is slowest.
Private sale typically nets $5,000-$15,000 more than dealer trade-in but requires more effort (advertising, showing, negotiation, title transfer). Dealer sales are faster and simpler. If time is valuable, the dealer premium may be worth it.
Title transfer requirements vary by state. Generally: sign the title over to the buyer, provide a bill of sale, and both parties file with the DMV. If the truck has a lien, your lender must be involved in the payoff and title release process. Do not hand over the truck without receiving payment.
